PEGGY (1990)

Based on Silver Donald Cameron’s radio play What Ever Happened to Peggy?, this half-hour film is the story of Artie and Jimmy, two Acadian brothers who can’t agree whether to sell or keep a small island that has been in their family for 200 years. During a visit to their ancestral village, they decided to settle the issue by reviving a childhood game called “peggy” – at which Jimmy was always a champion. But “Peggy” is also the name of Artie’s wife — who was once Jimmy’s girl friend. The competition on the playing field has many echoes, and the whole village becomes obsessed by it. By the end of the summer, the contest has dredged up many ghosts, and several secrets.

Produced by Imagex Productions and the National Film Board, and aired by the CBC, Peggy won awards for Best Short Film at the Canadian Film Celebration and theAtlantic Film Festival, and was a finalist in the same category at the Gemini Awards, where Silver Donald Cameron was also a finalist for Best Dramatic Writer.

Available, if at all, from the National Film Board, which released the video.
